Car Profiles Honda Mobilio

HONDA MOBILIO

This Brio based MPV competes with the likes of the Ertiga and Avanza but size actually rivals the Innova. Prices are same with the Avanza 1.5 G, which poses that of a better bargain though the RS is on the upper side. Honda may have an interesting alternative thats also a winner.

The Good: Drives like a car
The Bad: Cheap plastics

Review Alfa Romeo Giulia

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia was a long time coming, writes Brian Byrne. I remember seeing it at several motor shows in prototype and final production form long before it actually hit showrooms in Europe. So when it finally got to launch in Ireland in March, it just didnt seem like a new car.

The name recalls a series of mostly well-considered saloons built by the sporty-oriented brand between 1962-1977. And the model was at the time aimed at the ordinary family motorist.

The new one isnt. It has moved up in size, and aspiration. And even though it could be considered the spiritual successor to the 156 that arguably saved the brand from extinction in 1996 and the following decade, it is beyond the owners of those cars too.

The company has a lot riding on this one, with BMW in its sights, specifically the 3 Series. So the designers built a rear-drive architecture to satisfy the driving purists. Offered decent performance from the start. And, as Alfa has always done, provided a very high performance version under the pulse-raising Quadrifoglio label.

The style is elegant with the kind of thoroughbred tautness of a top-class racehorse. Theres no doubt about the pedigree, with the distinctive Alfa grille, and the offset front numberplate.

My review car had very nice alloys, which are rather vulnerable to kerbing (and despite my best efforts I mortifyingly did leave marks on one from an encounter in a very narrow street in County Kilkenny).

Inside is the kind of leather and trim that youd expect for where it is positioned. The instruments are a good mix of analogue and digital, with a mid-dash screen area the functions of which are managed by a rotary knob on the centre console. I appreciated the simplicity of the climate controls.

The car comes only with an 8-speed automatic, which can be manually managed either by the centre shifter or by big paddles behind the steering wheel. I initially expected that theyd get in the way of the indicators and wiper controls, but that didnt actually become an issue.

The power in the review car came from a 2.2 diesel with 180hp, a unit designed for the car and which proved quite a punchy performer. It worked exceptionally well with the autobox, and the overall driving experience was very refined. Switching the dri ving mode into dynamic did things to the engine and suspension responses that were useful on twisting country roads.

I enjoyed the car. But is it a real competitor to the 3 Series? Short answer, not yet. The Alfa has a bit more sporty flair than the 3 Series. Which is actually an advantage, because for that you will forgive it the things that keep it where it is.

Now, when I have the Quadrifoglio, all bets are off.

PRICE: €39,995-€99,945. EQUIPMENT: 2.0 and 2.9 petrols, 2.2 diesels; standard auto; lots of safety tech. RATING: 4.2/5.

Car Features Car and Driver Dishonorable Mention

There is a reason why the coveted Car of the Year Award exists: this is to know the best automobiles sold in the market. However, Car and Driver magazine (and Motor Trend and Automobile magazines) bought back their words on some vehicles in which they are anything but award-worthy of the award for some reasons. Do take note that the lemon law was not in existence yet and features like Bluetooth and airbags mounted in the seatbelts were basically a dream.

Let us now give you the dishonorable roll, ladies and gentlemen.
The Year: 1983
The Car: Renault Alliance
The Award: Car and Driver 10Best Cars and Motor Trend Car of the Year

Placing a French car (the Renault 9, to be exact) to an American setting is done by placing things that American loves in a car such as an monochrome interior and assembling it at Nashs assembly line in Wisconsin. The import from France had a 1.4 engine making 60hp (heck, 30 years later, a Kia Rio 1.4 carries 106hp) but the real deficiency lies on this: French made cars arent exactly known for their reliability which resulted to rusted units in the late 80s that resulted to the drop of resale value.

The Year: 2002
The Car: Ford Thunderbird
The Award: Motor Trend Car of the Year

Retro was in during the late 90s and the early 00s, with model s from Chrysler, Volkswagen, and MINI flying off dealers. Ford took advantage of the scene by reviving the Thunderbird name and incorporating 1955 design cues. Fantastic design, but the rest of the car was based on the Lincoln LS which is a not-so-stellar car to begin with. It looks good but it is not a fantastic performer, since it is one overweight beast. The novelty worn off with sales decreasing each year since 2002.

The Year: 1971
The Car: Chevrolet Vega
The Award: Motor Trend Car of the Year

The early 70s saw the spike on fuel prices which necessitated the American manufacturers to have a sub-compact which rivaled Toyota, Volkswagen, Datsun, and Honda back then. We all know the exploding fuel tanks from For d Pintos, which made the Chevy Vega a better proposition. One can get a plethora of body configurations, handling which connects to the car, Camaro looks for less, and an aluminum engine which was ahead of its time. But then the cylinders lying in the aluminum engine are faulty which leads oil pour on them, resulting to a smoky Vega back then. Plus the body cant withstand the elements nature throws in, which is why one cant see this car anymore in existence.

The Year: 1997
The Car: Cadillac Catera
The Award: Automobile All Stars

There is a good thing about being a large brand is one can borrow the vehicle to suit different tastes. Well, adapting a car for a certain market without further studying what they want can lea d to a sales disaster. The folks at GM took the German Opel Omega, redesign it and slap the Catera badge which seems to be great. The bad news is it felt porky since the engine cant take the weight and reliability issues sprouted one by one. Looks like BMW and Benz didnt feel scared at all during that time and it was one forgettable car in the US, since pitching in Cindy Crawford and the ducks (which are animated) werent that much effective.

The Year: 1985
The Car: Merkur XR4Ti
The Award: Car and Driver 10Best Cars

Another case of taking out a European car (in this situation, the three door Ford Sierra) for the American market without being successful. Ford fitted the 2.3 turbocharged engine and glued the Me rkur (pronounced as Mare-coor) badges which were then sold beside large Lincoln and Mercury sedans. It looked nice while the engine provided a somewhat delightful performance but four years later Ford pulled the plug for the Merkur, which only some took notice of it since US regulations and exchange rates took a toll to these cars.

The Year: 1997
The Car: Chevrolet Malibu
The Award: Motor Trend Car of the Year

One of the volume sellers but one of the unremarkable piece of automobiles sold back then. It took home the bacon but the car drove and handled blandly and its 2.4 4-cylinder had 150hp while a 3.1 V6 carried 155hp paired to a 4-speed automatic, something embarrassing to begin with. And US rent-a-car companies love them, especially that this generation still continued on with the sixth generation model as the "Classic" with sales exclusive for them.

The Year: 1990
The Car: Lincoln Town Car
The Award: Motor Trend Car of the Year

Making a new generation of a car is one tough decision for a manufacturer. The wizards at Lincoln drank the Town Car some growth pills without bothering to change the mechanical parts including a floaty suspension (which is one reason why people love being ridden in one), a very hard steering radius, an archaic 4.9 V8 displacing 150hp, and a turtle 4-speed automatic. Responding to some criticisms, a 190hp 4.6 V8 was placed in it but even after that, the technologies used is still the same until its redesign in 1998, in which it was still the Town Car you know since your high school days.

The Year: 1980
The Car: Chevrolet Citation
The Award: Motor Trend Car of the Year

The Citation was Chevrolets counterpart in the X-Car platform - a front wheel drive compact car composed of the Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Omega, and Pontiac Phoenix. At first, it was decent enough with two engines that are old-school and a very Detroit interior with plastic abound. It had some bad stuff such as loose bolts in the suspension, rusty body, noisy transmission, and falling interior trim. A car with great dreams that got to a sink hole of nightmares.

The Y ear: 1974
The Car: Ford Mustang II
The Award: Motor Trend Car of the Year

Mustangs were known for their raw power from their V8 engines, but Ford took a step backward with the second generation Mustang since theyve ditched the V8s for wheezy 4-cylinder and V6 engines in the name of fuel efficiency no thanks to the oil crisis prevalent during that time. Exterior designs are funny than ferocious, plus the platform was based on the minuscule Ford Pinto. Oh wait, Ford placed a V8 engine for a short tenure with 129hp (I am not kidding here) that played a very dangerous role in the cars structure.

The Year: 1995
The Car: Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique
The Award: Car and Driver 10Best Cars

Back in 1995, Chrysler and Ford launched the Chrysler Cirrus and Dodge Stratus (the Plymouth Breeze didnt come along until 1996) and the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique respectively. The unfortunate child on the list is the latter pair since they were deemed too small to compete with since it was based on the European Ford Mondeo. Americans simply cannot appreciate this vehicle due to its compact size found in the rear bench (even adding some leg room didnt help either). And having a small car competing with the Accord and Camry in price, things get doomed.

Car Features Top 30 Best Selling Vehicles of the Philippines for 2016

According to reports from Philippine Daily Inquirer and Autoindustriya, 366 days of 2016 we have seen nearly 400,000+ vehicles driven off dealer lots. Sure, we had transitioned to a new administration and two major motor shows occurred in a span of months, people were excited to buy more cars. Despite some news of additional taxes for cars this year (it has yet to be approved), let us look back.

Filipinos, these are the 30 best selling cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs you have purchased this year.

30. Nissan Almera (3,176 units sold, +83%)

Updated for 2016 (it was launched last November 2015), the Almera received a new face as well as a lower engine option and a leather clad variant. While the 1.5 is the mainstay engine choice, the 1.2 is new for this year. Sales had jumped ever since, reaching its peak.

29. Chevrolet Trailblazer (3,211 units sold, -12%)

Chevrolets best seller (and what would be its saving grace) received a minor change for 2017 just last October. It is the oldest among the bunch of PPVs, especially three main rivals had received all new engines and faces ever since. We seriously hope that Chevy would fix their pricing for this year.

28. Hyundai Tucson (3,308 units sold, +107%)

After giving up the crown to the Subaru Forester in 2015, the Korean car maker wrestled the title back for last year. Thanks to a lower price entry and a diesel engine (which is Hyundais proposition), the Tucson is the best seller among compact SUVs.

27. Hyundai Grand Starex (3,733 units sold, +42%)

What used to be a Filipino favorite had now relegated itself to the sidelines recently, the Grand Starex had some changes in its line-up yet some people would buy them in droves. This model will turn 10 years old this year.

26. Mitsubishi Strada (3,965 units sold, -7%)

In 2015, which was its first year for of its model change, it sold nearly 4,000 units. Last year, it fell down to 3,965 in its full years. Sure, a 2.4 engine from the Montero Sport was added to the line-up in the 4x4 model but rivals had fresher engines and faces.

25. Isuzu D-Max (3,966 units sold, +27%)

Beating the Strada by just one unit, the D-Max experienced an increase in sales due to a new engine and for the LS models, an update for 2017 in September 2017. Sure, it may be conservative and utilitarian for some, but nothing beats the purpose of a pick-up truck.

24. Kia Picanto (4,073 units sold, -20%)

Kias best selling vehicle is this tiny hatchback, which unfortunately didnt experience an increase in sales despite the industry trend. Old as it is, this one sells to a virtue of low down payment schemes which attracts first time owners.

23. Toyota Corolla Altis (4,154 units sold, -11%)

Despite falling sales by just a hundred units, the Corolla Altis is the segment leader among compact sedans. Sure, it may be conservative for some, but buyers who want something dependable on their daily drive wouldnt go wrong with this car.

22. Isuzu Crosswind (4,659 units sold, +14%)

For nearly fifteen years straight, the Crosswind had not received any major changes and despite this, people are still buying this one. However, it had lost its title as the brands best seller especially that market tastes have shifted and the price difference isnt that far.

21. Nissan NP300 Navara (4,779 units sold, +15%)

The third best selling pick-up truck in the country had overtaken Mitsubishi in terms of sales in that category. One unique selling proposition of this one is its coil springs at the back (although the usual leaf springs can be ordered), ensuring a smooth ride.

20. Honda Mobilio (4,797 units sold, +62%)

Hondas missing link is this MPV, especially that it competes with several older rivals and those with diesel engines. Thanks to a fresher image, it had introduced a lot of people to the straight H bra nd without sacrificing utility.

19. Nissan NV350 Urvan (5,660 units sold, +34%)

No more simplistic engines, in its place is a modern CRDi engine plus individual vents complemented by Nissans famed air conditioning system made this one a best seller. Shuttle drivers have now another van to choose from.

18. Mitsubishi Mirage (7,487 units sold, +25%)

Receiving an update last year coupled with an endorsement from Alde n Richards and Maine Mendoza, Mirage sales experienced an increase. If its sedan counterpart targets a different market, this one attracts first time buyers aiming for something practical.

17. Ford Ranger (8,158 units sold, -3%)

August 2015, we had witnessed an updated Ranger for 2016. While sales are still at the higher scale, it had decreased despite the update. Seven or eight variants with varying equipment levels at different price ranges are available.

< /div>
16. Honda City (8,913 units sold, +2%)

Hondas best seller in the country (it broke its record for the most number of units sold since 1996) never fails to be updated each year. From additional items to numerous limited edition models, the City would continue to sell well and we wonder what new features that would be added.

15. Hyundai Eon (9,675 units sold, +17%)

This tiny hatchback had become everyones freedom car at a lower price point without denting their wallets or surroundings. Sure, it may be basic for some (hubcaps, no airbags, wind-up windows at the back) but it does look somewhat modern over its main Indian rival.

14. Mitsubishi Adventure (9,705 units sold, +39%)

Beating its 2002 peak, Mitsubishi sold 9,700 units of their dependable Adventure last year. We have no idea on how interested spiked on this vehicle. It may be old, but there are some fans of this vehicle and production may end late this year due to stringent emission requirements.

13. Ford Ecosport (10,010 units sold, +15%)

Back in 2014, Ford entered a territory with no rivals and had enjoyed tremendous success. Last year, competit ors came to eat a slice of its share and the Ecosport emerged as the segments leader. We had witnessed a Black Edition which featured black color rims in the previous year.

12. Mitsubishi Montero Sport (10,768 units sold, -7%)

Being its first full year of its redesigned model, the Montero Sport didnt manage to buck the trend and rather, went to the reverse. Despite an all new engine, some find the design polarizing but the sudden unintended acceleration issue still lingers on.

11. Hyundai Accent (12,360 units sold, +79%)

Probably a record for a Korean brand when it comes to sales numbers (the honor used to belong to the Kia Pride back then), the Hyundai Accent saw huge success thanks to its diesel engine and the growth of transport based apps whose demand warrants this vehicle.

10. Toyota Hilux (12,405 units sold, +42%)

Sure, it was expensive than some of its rivals when it was launched in July 2015. However, price didnt prevent people to buy this pick-up truck especially it has a new engine (Toyotas GD engine family) which gave competitors a shock. Were pretty sure people are upgrading their trucks this year, thus the increase of this segm ent.

9. Ford Everest (12,453 units sold, +152%)

Although it was launched in May 2015, deliveries (albeit in limited quantities) started September but full blast shipments were fulfilled just last year. It had dislodged its smaller brother, the Ecosport, as the Blue Ovals best seller.

8. Isuzu MU-X (12,657 units sold, +16%)

If there is one vehicle responsible for Isuzus increase in sales (as well as their ascent to t he PPV sales rankings) is this one. Replacing the slow selling Alterra, the MU-X looked fresh and with ample shipments to meet demand, more units were sold last year.

7. Mitsubishi Mirage G4 (12,880 units sold, +13%)

Another surprise for Mitsubishi is this tiny sedan, which replaced the Montero Sport as their best seller. The G4 has oodles of space despite its tiny proportions, a fuel efficient engine, and low prices which had a lot of people buy them. Local production of this vehicle starts this month, with the hatchback following months later.

6. Toyota Avanza (13,466 units sold, +59%)

September 2015 saw an updated Avanza for 2016 and who wouldnt knew that this will sell more than it sold last time. It may be crude for some but offering a cheap seven seat vehicle in a dependable package, Toyota has a winner here.

5. Toyota Innova (18, 137units sold, +7%)

Sure, it may have more amenities and a new diesel engine which had a jump in price, this didnt deter people on buying this one. Do take note that deliveries of the new generation model started last April, with some first generation model units were sold earlier last year.

4. Toyota Wigo (18,430 units sold, +37%)

This Indonesian made hatchback became an entry point for most people to motoring freedom, all with the Toyota badge. Yes, it may have cheap touches but most didnt care, all they want is something that is easy to drive and live with.

3. Toyota Hiace (19,913 units sold, +19%)

For a van, reaching this number is an impossible feat. What the Mitsubishi L300 Versa Van and Kia Besta failed to reach during their prime years, the Hiace had done it and sales were up for this people mover. A 3.0 engine is now mandatory for all models.

2. Toyota Fortuner (28,549 units sold, +81%)

Woah, 28,000 units for something that costs over a million pesos, its unbelievable. But Toyota did what competitors hope to reach, and theyve managed this one so far. All new for 2016, it had new diesel engines and a body design but despite fresher alternatives, this is the one car to beat.

< br />1. Toyota Vios (36,256 units sold, +9%)

For eight years straight, this is the one car that had defined the Filipino buyer, and this car fulfilled the things on what they are finding. Although it had sold the same number of units in 2015, this one is still the best seller, and for a good reason. 2016 saw an engine upgrade together with a new CVT transmission.
